Research: Layered Shaders

In my off time between projects I played around with Arnold’s layered shaders to emulate something of a former mia_car_paint_shader from the old days (mental ray). The idea is that beneath a layer of reflective coating lies a varnish that contains tiny flakes, which spread out the highlight across the surface.

shader_play.redI started out with the red and varied the settings of the various layers across the other colors (with very distinct flakes in the blue version and more variation in the base layer in the golden one). Further work could get into the refining of the rendering speed, which I’m sure can be further optimized.

The layeres were written out as custom AOVs and then composited.
