After work on Helping Hand finished at Axis Animation I was put on this project very early on, during the late layout phase. The setting of this new IP by peoplecanfly studio fascinated me – I love stories set in vastly different science fiction realities, so reading the concept book and immersing myself in the universe were quite easy. As a lighting lead I helped the look development process and eventually created many of the shot masters closely with the director Sava Zivkovic and art director Garreth Hector.
Edit: Axis has released the director’s cut with the original soundtrack here: www.axisanimation.com/features/outriders-directors-cut
On the technical side this project had some unique challenges, lots of volumes, heavy geometry and not last of all the 4k output. Lighting and Rendering was done with Houdini/Mantra and for compositing we used Nuke – after a long time with Fusion, I was a bit rusty at first, though after a couple of hours I felt right at home again. The final stretch was done with a minimal team of artists and yet we finished with about a week to spare for QC (Quality Control).
